Millennials and the Neptune-Uranus Conjunction in the Wake of the Aquarian Age

 

Millennials, born between 1980 and 1995, have inherited the perhaps disadvantageous status as the last generation of Pisces as we move into Aquarius, entering adulthood at what is arguably the most pivotal moment for the translocation of the former to the subsequent age. Compounded with the ominous juncture of their birthright, there are (as with all generations) certain correlative astrological conditions that prescribe the cultural associations of this generation in historical time. Henceforth, I will explore the planetary positions of this period upon which this qualification is hinged, and how those influences impose upon the psychology of those born at the final thrust of the receding era.

 

Uranus and Neptune: 

The positions, movements, declinations and intersections of Uranus and Neptune during the last decades of the 20th century are integral to the consensus of urgency amongst Millennials for the necessary disintegration of existing power structures, having been exposed as malignant and damaging to the great majority and the proletariat, a sudden transparency of the ascendant order afforded by the increased availability of Information on a scale that is as new as its repercussions are quantum—a foreseeable symptom of the intensifying influence of Aquarius which gathers together the cognitive processes of individuals in the interest of a congruent social design.

 

The recent emergence of alternatives to the existing modes of the power state is a point of contention that is not only divisive (as we see the rise of populist movements throughout the western world and the comeuppance of reactionary militant regimes such as Isis) but is also consistent with certain conjectures regarding the flux of political power tacitly assumed by the egalitarian quality of Aquarius. Uranus, the planetary ruler of Aquarius, is charged with voltaic energy and is associated with flux, challenges to tradition, discoveries and innovation—an advocate of progress, enlightenment and revolution in all aspects (with a particular emphasis on the advancement of technology and aeronautics). Neptune, ruler of Pisces, is qualified by such delineations as fantasy, imagination, music, illusion, confusion, compassion, spirituality and all that is associated with the realm of the subconscious. On the other side of the same coin, Neptune also embodies the opposing paradigms of the subconscious dimension, ruling such damaging affectations as deception, secrecy, guilt, manipulation and addiction.

 

Uranus and Neptune formed a conjunction lasting approximately 10 years from 1988 to 1998, becoming exact in 1993. Embodied in this conjunction is the crucial message of this transition; as ideological Pisces is mingled with progressive Uranus, their respective qualities are simultaneously inflated and eclipsed by the other. This unification is a double-edged sword. On the one hand, the pietistic tendency of Pisces is challenged by the skepticism and anarchistic aptitude of Uranus, inciting the necessary reevaluation of all institutions and belief systems rendered obsolete in the face of the “new world order.” On the other hand, charged and individualistic Uranus is deluged of it’s penchant for self-sufficiency by emotional, compassionate and fanatical Pisces, creating a global consciousness that undulates between Uranus’s emphases on the needs of the self and submission to exploitative sectarianism. As a result, natives born and raised under this influence are easily coerced by subliminal suggestion proliferated by duplicitous and incumbent forces, which is then applied to the individuals need to self-identify, a circumstance that could lend itself to nationalistic and xenophobic tendencies in nations where there is a strong sense of patriotic, provincial or religious dogmatism. On the other hand, compassionate Pisces and humanitarian Uranus will enrich these natives with a strong sense of social responsibility and urgency to inspire and actuate reform in the archaic framework of civilization.

 

This conjunction repeats itself in a 170-year cycle, the last revolutions in recent history taking place in 1821, 1651 and 1481, junctures of time that are all indicative of important periods of flux in the development of the modern world. In the late 15th century we saw such consequential developments as the sustained dominion of the Ottoman Empire, the Spanish inquisition’s auto-da-fe, the supersession of the late Middle Ages to the early modern era and the beginning of the age of discovery and the rise of globalization. The mid 17th century was qualified by European colonization and practice of enslavement in the Americas, the founding of the Dutch East India Company, the reign of Louis XIV and the baroque cultural movement as well as the scientific revolution incited by the proliferation of such monumental theories as heliocentrism and the laws of universal gravitation. The last transpiration of this conjunction occurred in the early 1820’s, with unchecked ascension of power sustained by the British Empire after the fall of the Napoleonic, Spanish, Mughal and Holy Roman Empires. Karl Marx was born in 1818, under the influence of a Neptune-Uranus conjunction in Sagittarius. This period was also marked by the establishment of the church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, the discovery of Antarctica, the telegraph and the end of the Spanish Inquisition. In my research, I calculated each chart of the 170-year cycle, going back 2000 years to the beginning of the previous millennia and the age of Pisces. I discovered that with every two revolutions, Uranus and Pisces moves through the signs in succession, stationed in Cancer in 49 BC, at the onset of the millennia and emerging in Capricorn in 1988 at its culmination.

This procession completes half of the seasonal cycle, kicking off the age of Pisces with the Neptune-Uranus conjunction occupying the estival (summer) solstice, making its way to the hiburnal (winter) solstice over the course of the Millennia’s duration. Just as The Great Year imposes itself in protraction upon the contralateral dimension of geocentric time, the planets and their individual orbits are bound to a prescribed order that implicates the nature of a particular epoch as corresponding with the completion of each cycle of the specified planet’s rotation. The secession of Neptune and Uranus conjunctions noted during the Age of Pisces reveals a procession of this nature, interned in the hemisphere of the chart prescribed by an emphases on the other, externalization, connection to communities and a lack of self motivation. These conditions impose the theory that we are in the midst of a cycle bound by the orbits of Neptune and Uranus that began approximately halfway through the age of Aries, a cycle that will culminate at the reciprocal midpoint of the Age of Aquarius, taking place over the course of 4000 years, from 1000 BC to 3000 CE. The position of the procession of the Pisces-Uranus conjunction through the last age spans the trajectory of Cancer to Capricorn, completing the second and third quarter of the astrological cycle, the western axis of the zodiac wheel. Given our current juncture in the course of this cycle’s duration, each 1000-year period can be correlated to each quadrant of the astrological wheel as it fulfills the zodiacal rotation. Each quadrant is associated with a frame of reference that helps to designate the psychology of the chart based on the calibrated order of the planets within those constraints. This rubric can also be applied to historical inquiry. Here, I have attempted to provide those correlations:

The first quarter of the cycle, corresponding with the quadrant qualified by awareness of self, typifies the last 1000 years before the Common Era, a period associated with the Axial Age and the development of philosophical tenets now considered fundamental to the framework of modern human pathology impressed upon by the influence of such apostles of thought as Pythagoras, Heraclitus, Buddha, Parmenides, and Anaxagoras. The culmination of the first quarter of the cycle coincides with the beginning of the Gregorian Calendar, with the birth of Christ and reign of Christian ideology, a transition corresponding to the shift in the Universal nerve center from an emphasis on ‘Self’ to an emphasis on ‘Other’ as Neptune and Uranus crossed the axis referred to as the IC (Imum Coeli), the pole that marks the separation of the Eastern and Western hemispheres as well as the familial and spiritual root of the psyche. The completion of the second quarter of the cycle coincided with the fall of the Roman Empire, marking the shift from ‘internalization’ to ‘externalization’ as Neptune and Uranus rose above the horizon, crossing the threshold of the descendent or horizon into the southern hemisphere. I found the events of the third quarter to be particularly emblematic of the reciprocated quadrant; qualified by an “objective awareness of others” this period (taking place between 1000 CE and the present) saw the colonization and enslavement of peoples and nations by the West. Our current juncture in this cycle signals a different kind of crossing, as we bore through the axis of the Mid-heaven and declare our return to the Eastern Hemisphere, the domain that privileges free will and individual pursuits over all. Forthcoming, the final quarter of the astrological wheel is located in the Southeastern quadrant, compounding the individually focused Eastern Hemisphere with the externally charged Southern Hemisphere. This integration is commonly associated with the concept of personal identity as it is understood through a greater social and political context. This quadrant contains the 10th (Capricorn), 11th (Aquarius) and 12th (Pisces) houses, the houses signifying vocation, society and ideology. Accordingly, we can assume that the next 1000 years will be typified and influenced by an urgent reevaluation of the social order and the conditions of politics and bureaucracy the world over, an assumption already predicated by theorists deliberating the approach of the Aquarian Age.

 

The Disintegration of Music and Art

As of now, the first generation to come of age in the 21st century might seem a contingent casualty of history. Born at the cusp of the age of Pisces and Aquarius, they are condemned to social and spiritual faculties that are relevant only to the policies vested in the interim of the last two thousand years. Reaching adolescence at the apex of its culmination and coming into adulthood at the sudden onset of its disintegration, Millennials contending with the departure of the Pisces age have suffered frequent confrontations with the seemingly obsolescent predication of their congenital programming, unable or unwilling to emulate the divergent qualities of the ascending age.  Where Pisces is governed by a sentimental disposition, often demagogic in its preoccupation with fantasy, Aquarius strips nostalgia from meaning, equalizes the social order and reprimands effusive individuation. The age of Pisces was defined by its veneration of idols, cultural and religious, inoculated with the notion that human material rendered to provoke the senses of the mind would conciliate and fortify everyday life with spiritual substance. Music and art were integral to this age for the stratification of the political and social fields, entrenched as it was in the relational process of experience. Pisces is the crowning edge of the zodiac, the sign that stands alone in the proximity of the subconscious mind to other worlds and the supernatural. It is an age that is unique as far as the creative acquisitions of its time possessing an intuitive and compounded access to the sublime. Proportionately, music and art sprung from this period had a mobilizing and transcendent capacity, impressed upon the devout and secular alike.

 

Having spent their formative years under the duress of this influence, Millennials might have imagined that the culture associated with their generation would be typified and established in the same mode as the generations of the previous century; by the gathering of their contemporaries to participate in spirited cultural movements where art and social politics are merged by zeitgeist. For Millennials, the most arduous cross to bear in the departure of their native age might be the spiritual disseverance of creative expression from culture and social order. In the age of Pisces, the enchantment of art was available to assuage the slings and arrows of human suffering when vast dimensions of the body politic were ravaged and exterminated in the championing of one god’s legitimacy over another. Raised by their baby boomer parents in the last decades of the last century, Millennials were influenced to assume the indivisibility of art with ethnology. Their undoing is that their only aegis of defense is that of the same tired Piscean faith in the transcendent power of art as the reconciliation of the tactile qualities of suffering. Their misfortune is that art in the age of Aquarius is may lack the wherewithal to serve as a function of divine supplication, qualified instead by a pragmatic social logic, no longer the rhythm of the spheres rendered from human material into temporal forms possessed by or conceived of suffering endured.

 

In addition to being canonized as the astrological ruler of music, Pisces is also associated with institutions in its various incarnations, as well as the submission of the masses to an idea or figurehead that dictates the conditional existence of the status quo. Capitalism under Pisces is a dangerous occupation, as Pisces privileges a social order that distinguishes a single body or entity as the master of the majority. The precipitated flattening and dissemination of cultural production at the onset of the Aquarian age is a result that is two-fold in its causality. Aquarius neutralizes disproportionate power dynamics and does away with unnecessary ostentation while Pisces codifies every aspect of human invention to conform to the dominant cultural phase. As one phase is usurped and disintegrated in percentages by the other, a climate is created where individuals are estranged by a culture from which they had come to expect a sense of existential tutelage, experiencing a sense of loss where there was once a function of meaning making. Under Aquarius, art must have a utilitarian capacity, to perform as an agent of progress, particularly that which privileges technocratic objectives over the correspondent resonance of individual experience. Furthermore, astrological speculation might infer that a shift in the denomination of governance from Pisces to Aquarius could be the surrender of autocracy to technocracy. We might assume that natives of the Aquarian age will not be programmed with the same supplicant and sentimental tendencies as that of Pisces and will seek their existential salvation in other dimensions of human occupation; the cultivation of new technologies, furthering our mastery of the sciences and understanding of human biological and cognitive processes, the rise of egalitarianism and increased access to the cosmos–all pursuits associated with the sign of Aquarius.

 

Many of the dates provided in this essay are not exact; they are rough estimations for the time specified taking into account retrograde cycles and other conditions of influence. Additionally, an exact determination of the point of departure and the duration of the cusp period between the Pisces and Aquarius age is a subject of much debate among astrologers. An age corresponds to approximately 2160 years (determined by the notion of the processional rotation of the earth, also referred to as “the great year” lasting about 26,000 years). It is accepted that Pisces began roughly at outset of the Gregorian calendar and there is some consensus that speculates the industrial revolution as one of the first symptoms of the rise of Aquarius working itself upon human forces. Regardless, history shows that this is a gradual transition, spanning several centuries of crises and upheaval in the dominant rule where empires and ideologies are overthrown and others ascend in their stead. Now is one of those historical moments of vacillation that shifts towards uncertain fate, where generations are lost in the shuffle of history. Lost as they may be in the scope of collective memory, they are not diminished in dignity as they are the tactile members of progress through time, the agents of flux, the blue-pencil rectifiers to the codex of civilization.

2016: Chart Analysis for the Solar Year

The year is a wheel with eight spokes. Each circuit is comparable to the cycle of a human life. The Winter Solstice is the time before we were born, the great dark uterine void from which all is formed. The vast black ring around all possibility, its perimeter bulging with promise. Light is conceived in the cold dark at the time of the Winter Solstice. The smallest spark, the most tentative hint of a glow, is imagined in the dense ambience of its absence. This chart is an analysis of 2016 based on the state of the Cardinal axis at the time of the winter solstice, a chart generated from the coordinates as they were at the exact at the moment of this seasonal transition (0 degrees Capricorn, December 22, 2015 4:48 am UTC). The winter solstice is significant as it marks the culmination of the annual solar cycle. In the northern hemisphere, it is when the sun reaches its waning nadir and when the sun reaches its maximum southerly declination in the southern hemisphere. In Chinese astrology, this is when yin converts to an increasing yang.

Looking at this chart, the most arresting attribute is the overwhelming number of aspect patterns that are formed. Aspect patterns or formations occur when three or more planets are connected by a shared aspect, forming a range of configurations with varying tones and implications. In this chart there is a grand trine forming two kites, a mystic rectangle and a t-square, all formed synergistically so that each aspect contributes to the unified sum of its parts. In a contingency such as this, certain planets or houses are often emphasized, behaving as the propulsive element to the conditions of the chart. In this case, the emphasized planet appears to be Mercury in the 3rd house. Regardless of this rare transpiration of aspect formations, Mercury already has a greater cadence in this chart, as it is also out-of-bounds, a condition caused by the coordinates of its declination.

 

Mercury out-of-bounds in Capricorn

The significance of the out-of-bounds planet shares some of the same qualities of the un-aspected one, in that the energies represented by the planet in question aren’t bound by the standard limitations for access to planetary energies. Out-of-bounds mercury signifies an unbridled use of energy to confer ideas and opinions, often unsolicited or regurgitative. In Capricorn, this combination has an authoritative quality and can take the form of unchecked verbal aggression (see Donald trump and the alt-right). To add insult to injury, Pluto, the planet of power and regeneration is conjunct mercury, encysting an even greater proclivity for tyranny in the realm of communicated ideas.

Cardinal T-square

This T-square is formed with Mars in Libra in the 11th (the planet of aggression and primal energy in the house of social structures, community and society) in opposition to Uranus in Aries in the 5th (the planet of social uprising, flux and technology in the house of creative enterprise and recreation). Mars opposition Uranus is a turbulent combination, mars being a volatile planet and Uranus, a slow moving, outer planet, increasing the weight of this aspect. Uranus (air) feeds the fire of mars and in turn, mars activates Uranus’s capacity for upheaval while imbuing the societal aspect of Uranus with conflict; driving a fierce antipathy towards traditions and ascendant forces and instigating reactionary and revolutionary action. This opposition is accessed through Mercury at the apex of the T-square, which is in Capricorn in the 3rd house (the planet of intellectual activity in the house of communication and our capacity to relate to our immediate environment). This T-square is formed by Cardinal planets, meaning it is triggered by a crisis of identity and encourages contingent action. With Capricorn the apex of this pattern, the bearing of this crisis is hinged upon identification with success and social achievements; the combative, revolutionary quality of the mars-Uranus opposition is manifested and provoked by the ambitious pretentions of power driven individuals. T-square’s pose a challenging culmination of forces, but ultimately incite the necessary action to achieve its resolution. The fourth leg of the T-square (opposition mars) is in cancer, so the stabilizing force in this aspect is to strive for the immediate goals of emotional security and the people and places that provide a nurturing spiritual center, the feeling of being at home.

Earth Grand Trine

This grand trine is made up of three planets: Jupiter in Virgo in the 10th house, moon in Taurus in the 6th house and mercury in Capricorn in the third. This is a double earth trine, as the majority of the incorporated planets fall in houses that are also ruled by the element of earth (with the exception of Mercury in the third house, ruled by Gemini). Earth grand trines seek to preserve the security achieved through the existing status quo as it strives to maintain the structures that advocate for the harmony of its corresponding elements. For this reason Trines often indicate a tendency for stasis, despite being formed entirely by harmonic aspects, as it is this condition of symmetry and equilibrium that lends itself to complacency and inaction. It is fortunate then in this case, that the grand trine is punctuated twice by two kite aspect patterns, formed by an opposition that bisects the trine. Jupiter, planet of abundance and expansion is opposition Chiron, the “wounded healer” in Pisces in the fourth house. Jupiter in the 10th house is conducive for individual enterprise, but it is also accommodating for the potential danger of bringing personal belief systems into the realm of business and politics. Jupiter in Virgo is also indicative of a tyrannical or fanatical predisposition, reminiscent of a biblical propensity for black and white/ good versus evil approach to social politics. In its 50-year orbit Chiron is back in Pisces for the first time since the 60s, and it is a tricky placement for the dwarf planet of trauma and healing, most notably associated with the potential for suffering on a global scale. Zealousness, martyrdom, messianic fixations and resentfulness towards the ‘will of God’ are likely symptoms of this influence. The earth grand trine reminds us of the limits of our physical reality, so it is significant that this trine is being punctuated by Chiron in Pisces, the implications of which might be best described with words like ‘divine submission’ or ‘cosmic angst.’ Here again is the nurturing energy of Cancer delivering us from tyranny. Although Chiron in the fourth house is often the most difficult placement for Chiron natally, an indication that the family and the home are the areas emphasized as the source of individual trauma (and it is likely that there will be plenty of destabilization in this area this year as well), it also is a suggestion for where we might find the emotional equipment to actuate the healing energy of Chiron. This chart emphasizes the importance of creating familial strongholds, zones allocated for community organizing—inclusive, mobilizing, inviolable.

 

Un-aspected Sun in the Second House

This is a rare occurrence and a significant one, as aspects are the decisive elements that indicate the qualities with which the planets behave in the chart and in relation to each other. They describe with specificity the constitution of the personality, based on the interactive quality of natal symbols. When a planet is un-aspected, there is no interaction between its own representation and other elements of the chart. The planet is singular and becomes agitated in its state of alienation, without other access points to allow the dissemination of its potency. The un-aspected planet wields an unconstrained freedom of power in the chart, which often lends itself to all the injurious aspects of power in this magnitude. The second house, being the house that represents all things we assign value to—the things we own, the assets and capitol we accrue—also embodies the value we assign to ourselves. This influence might inspire some extreme cases of self-aggrandizement and other ego related dysfunctions as well as a preoccupation with superficial signifiers for status and quality of character (King Louis the XIV had an un-aspected sun in his natal chart). Sun in the second house can also indicate a tendency for over self-identification and possessiveness, arrogance or pride. In an event chart this can lead to an increase in the accumulation of assets or power for individuals, and could by all means create an even greater disparity in the global distribution of wealth.

 

A note about the winter solstice as the signifying chart of the New Year:

The winter solstice is referred to as a cardinal ingress, of which there are four over the course of the year (0° Cap/ winter solstice, 0° Aries/ spring equinox, 0° Cancer/ summer solstice, 0° Libra/ fall equinox). These points have been used to predict the global conditions for the solar year since the beginning of the previous millennia. However, determining which of the aforesaid axes should signify the true onset of the New Year has been a subject of debate throughout the centuries. Ptolemy privileged the Aries ingress as it is the point at which the length of the day begins to exceed the length of the night, as well as it being the incipient sign in the zodiac. Alternatively, Pagan tradition celebrates Samhain, (Halloween) corresponding with the fall equinox, as the culmination of the year. The general consensus among astrologers both in the east and west seems favor the Capricorn ingress, as with the New Moon, Capricorn represents the end of the waning half of the cycle and the beginning of the new waxing half.
